Spotlight on Mazda CX-50

The Mazda CX-50 is an eye-catching, impressively fun-to-drive compact crossover SUV designed explicitly for the North American market. It shares many similarities with the popular Mazda CX-5, but is a little larger and has a greater emphasis on outdoor activities. What also sets it apart from the rest of the Mazda vehicle lineup is that, as of May 2025, it’s the only Mazda vehicle manufactured in the United States. Manufacturing location can be a big deal for drivers looking for a car that isn’t experiencing an increase related to tariffs.

Where is the Mazda CX-50 made?

When you buy a Mazda CX-50, it likely rolled off the assembly line at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama. The MTM is a joint venture between Mazda and Toyota that broke ground in 2018 and started producing vehicles in 2021, with the Mazda CX-50 production beginning in January 2022. The plant employs around 4,000 people and can build up to 300,000 vehicles annually.

MAZDA History

Mazda’s roots go back to 1920 as a company that developed, manufactured, and sold compressed cork boards. However, the company soon expanded into machine tools and made its first automobile in 1931 with the “Mazda-go” tricycle truck. The company made its first passenger vehicle, the Mazda R360 Coupe, in 1960. Mazda has produced many notable and beloved vehicles over the years, including the Mazda MX5, which you may know by its other name: Miata. The automotive press recognizes Mazda’s crossover lineup for combining thrilling performance with impressive reliability.

First in the World: Mazda’s Skyactiv-X Engine

First in the World: Mazda’s Skyactiv-X Engine

Mazda’s Skyactiv-X engine is the first in the world to burn gasoline using diesel-style compression ignition. The result? Amazing power and economy.

At the Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda released new info on its highly anticipated compression-ignition Skyactiv-X engine. It’s all a bit daunting if you’re not an engineer, but helpfully, Mazda put together a short video explaining exactly how this revolutionary engine works.

Essentially, this gas-powered engine can run like a diesel, using compression ignition to burn its fuel. Mazda calls this Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition (since a spark plug is still used to initiate combustion), and it’s the first engine that can switch seamlessly between compression and spark ignition, depending on load.
